Free Willy

When a young orca whale gets separated from his parents and ends up at a marina, things look dicey for getting him back home. Until a young street kid named Jesse befriends the big guy and teaches him a few tricks. But Willy tanks in front of audiences, so the kid and his pals must try to free Willy. Yeah, major spoiler there.

Price: $11.

Details: Directed by Simon Winder and written by Keith Walker and Corey Blechman, this movie stars Jason James Richter, Lori Petty, and Keiko the Whale. Runtime is 112 minutes; released in theaters July 16, 1993; on DVD Nov. 19, 1997. Rated PG.

Why It’s a Perfect Pet Movie: Well, it’s a whale. Who’s a pet. Isn’t that enough? And where else can you see a 12-year-old kid passionate enough to return a three-ton whale to the ocean? It’s some of the best problem-solving around.
